PostSubject: NFMM Moderators   Mon 25 Aug 2014, 12:23 am

As many of you may have realized, Insano has reintroduced moderators to Need for Madness Multiplayer on April 23, 2014. Basically, the moderators can type a command that gives a person a 24 hour ban from the certain room the banned player was in, usually less depending on when the server will reset. That is the power moderators have, they do NOT have a server reset option, unban option, mute option ,kick from created game option ,etc , simply that one command. The instructions given to the moderators by Insano are very simple actually, if they see someone doing something wrong, warn them and if they do not stop, boot them out. Which pretty much seems like limitless power, since the moderators do not have specific guidelines to follow, it's basically up to how they interpret "wrong"

Incase some people do not have the list of the players with this ability (aka moderators), here it is :

  • Turbo
  • Thunder_Edge/RBD19
  • Ultimato
  • DragShot
  • Kodec
  • Tronik/ RAD1
  • radical24
  • Prayers

Now since it was basically the community that elected those candidates, I think they should have a say in which scenarios the moderators should use their abilities. I'll post a few suggestions and I hope people will post agreeing/disagreeing and/or posting more suggestions.

  • Stealing/leaking custom cars and stages, made private by the owner, or public for the leaking case ( if the owner made it super public.. it's clearly okay, but it's rarely the case for an owner to leak his own work.

  • Spamming, and here is the simple definition of the type being refereed to : Sending messages in the lobby that has no meaning whatsoever, and just takes room.
Basically, this doesn't simply limit repeating the same sentence over and over, it means blocking the chat making it annoying for others to communicate

  • Hacking : modifying the physics/ stats of cars or anything else to gain an unfair advantage over people, without their consent.Clearly not allowed in competitive game play, such as tournaments and wars. Now I don't really think it's good to do it in the first place, but every once in a while it can be good for a laugh/challenge , just not being overused like boost stages, for example.

  • Hacking (2) : Using accounts that are not yours without the consent of the owner ( I do not support the idea of sharing it in the first place, such as clan accounts, but there are too many people already doing that, so it's up to Insano if he wants to stop the actual idea)

  • Going out of bounds and getting as far away from the stage as possible...? :I'm not referring to getting out for a few seconds to avoid someone nearby, many people do this whether intentional or not, it's not forbidden, according to Omar "it is part of the game."However, I mean the intentional abuse of this glitch.I have to admit, it's kind of harsh to do this, looking back, but I'm not sure I really regret it. It's pretty annoying when people just bounce out of the stage for a little boring "adventure" every single game, some people just do this to annoy others and make the game boring for them or staying outside and far while everyone is getting damaged/getting wasted and just going back in when there is one person with over 50% damage. It's not even an issue of it's their preference of how to play nfm, they can simply go on single player "Practice mode" and go make out with the mountains as much as they want.

I (not sure about the other moderators' policies) will NOT ban people for these reasons :

  • If someone is flaming or trolling me, I will just ignore them, I will not ban them. I am not offended by people not liking me, I won't lose any sleep so feel free

  • If 2 people are having an argument(flaming each other), I will not ban either one. The original purpose when moderators were introduced (before this time), was to stop hackers, not babysit people. You can simply close the chat box in game, and Omar stated that there will be an ignore list at some point ( you can ignore even when the messages appear though...)

Suggestions:
  • Giving warnings before banning. Suggested by Kinetico

Suggestions and comments are welcome

Agreed. This behavior should also be reported to Insano as well.

Disagreed. Honestly, this is the person who let go of their password's fault.

Disagreed/. As Omar said, this is part of the game. Race, DC, or make private games if you don't really like this. (Not supporting going out of the stage, just saying that people shouldn't be kicked for this behavior, even if it is a pathetic move.)

I have a suggestion of my own:

  • Use of excessive profanity: And by this, I mean people who constantly avoid the filter by putting "1" instead of "i" in words that are censored, as well as people using foul language, talking inappropriately in front of the children who play this game. This game was designed for all ages. Show some respect to the younger players, especially since they probably haven't heard about the birds and the bees yet.

Yeah I realize, if the owner gives his password away, it's his fault. That isn't what I meant though. I remember somewhere in 2012, not sure exactly. Someone was on Razor's account and Razor did end up recoveringit, but I know Razor wouldn't give his info away. While it is unlikely, it is possible for someone to hack the database or even guess the password of an account, without the owner giving it away. While guessing a password is pretty unlikely, nfmm has none of the security other websites do, it doesn't prevent you from trying new passwords after a certain amount of errors, it's still possible, is my point. If the person gave his password to someone and that person "betrayed" him, it's not our responsibility, I agree. However, I've seen it with DriftinTrueno's account (or however it's spelled), cars that belonged to others on private, were published on that account. So I believe in certain cases, we should take action, not to help the owner fix his mistake, there's the change password option for that, but to limit the damage it does to others, who had nothing to do with it.

I'm kind of 50/50 on this, I've actually kicked someone who has repeatedly done this but was also trolling/spamming. Looking back, I think it's kind of harsh sure. The thing is though, the first few times last person standing (other than the obnoxious guy outside of the stage), just races it off. But for how long? This game is clearly composed of both racing and wasting, but the majority of the community prefer one over the other. If a person prefers wasting, having to race all the way especially on stages like Twisted Revenge, it gets annoying after a few times, and sometimes it doesn't seem like a cheap way to gather wins, it seems the person is purposely trying to do this to ruin the fun for others. DC'ing kind of promotes this behavior, it makes the person doing this think " lol this is easy" and just keep on doing it. The problem with private games, is that you invite up to 7 people. The majority of the time, there are more players than that in the lobby, and it's basically first come first served. By making private games, you wouldn't just be excluding the guy ruining the fun, you would be excluding others as well. I think when Omar said it's part of the game,he meant that for example, if you're at a corner and just stunt outside to save your rear, then come back in 2 seconds later. That isn't too bad because people usually just try to stunt away and it just happens to take them outside, even if this was patched, you can still avoid hits like that. I don't think he's ever considered the fact that when you exit the stage, it's endless and makes an easy way to annoy people.

I've actually considered this, but honestly I use profanity myself occasionally as well, and I remember somewhere in 2011 or 2012, this guy called "Dowhow" claimed to be leaving the game because his mother saw bad words. The thing though, the majority of players do use it at some point, and some barley use it, it would be unfair to them. I realize you are most likely suggesting the people that use profanity all the time, but that also gives us room to interpret, what "excessive profanity" is, so I'm not really sure what it means. I would support however ( maybe what you mean) , if a person is using profanity to offend others, such as racial slurs

I agree with what Prayers said but really... I don't think swearing is a big deal cuz everyone's gonna find a way to swear even if there's a filter... besides... this is the internet, you can't expect everyone to follow the rules anywhere... Sure, this game is meant for all ages, but keep in mind that means teens and above might enjoy this game... and that can't stop them from using profanity in front of kids who are going to grow up and do the same anyway. And like Prayers said, I use it myself as well...

What I mean is, when someone is attacking another player with constant swear words, or when someone uses words associated to....well...I don't really want to say it, but let's just say the thing you do to make babies.

Well to be honest, my gf was on there once and it wasn't pretty. Some of the members on NFMM have no respect for the second interesting sometimes, and quite a few of those members were saying pretty interesting things tbh (you know what I mean). Not sure if this was just a one off but yeah... But like most of you guys have said cussing you can't avoid but seriously pushing the words on the screen and spamming it has to be controlled. My opinion nuff' said.

I with all the points Prayers made in the main topic so far. However, I don't like RAD1's suggestion. I think if the flaming does get more serious, it will also be considered spam and the person flaming/spamming will get banned anyway.

Agree, and don't agree, it depends.

If the person is constantly bypassing the filter for the exact reasons of flaming and being rude to one person or everyone, that's enough for me for a ban, but as long as someone is doing that because he lost or something similar, I don't see a problem, as long as it's not directed at other players, It's fine by me.

There is a case in where I would prefer to ban on sight, not ban with warning.

May just happen with me, but I'm not sure. Basically it's when some "troll" comes in the room and does the typical shouting in caps, insulting people, etc. You all know the "LOL", "ROFL", "LMFAO", "HAHAHAHA" guy, right? People used refer to him as Tyrone, back when it started off in a leaked account, but he keeps coming back at times, I'm pretty sure it's the same person, and it gets really annoying.

This person will just walk in to a room with either a leaked account or some username that has a bunch of random letters in, you've seen in before, then throws insults in caps, leaves, then comes back in with the same name, but with different capital letters and then insults you more just to get a response, they'll even spam the chat specifically to annoy you, so this is all on purpose. And they'll just make fun of you repeatedly until you do something about it, they also talk very immaculately like a 8 year old, but it's all acting.

I'm pretty sure you all know what I'm getting at here, Thunder_Edge agreed with me on this a while back, it's better to ban these type of people on sight instead of giving them a warning, if you give them a warning, it means it's play time for them. If all they do is insult in caps, leave, then come back with different capitals, and do the same thing OVER AND OVER AGAIN and their name is too long. You won't really get anywhere with these type of people.

This type of attitude clearly indicates that the person obviously did NOT come online to play and have fun, instead, they come and act like a complete child and mess around, banning with warning it unlikely to work, banning on sight or getting them when they are not prepared is the better idea for me, in my opinion I find it better to prevent this "troll" from even starting by booting them out the room before they begin to start spamming and flaming in caps, it's also not hard to distinguish who it is in the room because the name is just complete non-sense made up of a bunch of random letters or its a leaked account.

Oh so that isn't what I had in mind. The thing is , usually if person A swears at person B, person B will swear back. So technically speaking, both should be banned. I say in the circumstance you are suggesting , person B should just ignore person A. I don't think it's our place to settle disputes, just sit back and hope person B's internet feelings are not being hurt. We would practically ban half the community if we were to ban people constantly swearing, half the community would be gone. Besides, a lot of people joke around with their friends by making fun of them (sometimes in a way you think they're flaming) As I've posted earlier, I think we should limit that to PERSONAL insults ,racial slurs, etc. Not just the typical " I WILL F YOU UP NOOB."

@Ultimato wrote:

I never like banning people as my opening move. You have to remember, that at the end of the day, you have to loosen up a bit because no matter how childish some act, they usually will still provide entertainment by joining the games. NFMM has been less active than usual in the past month or so, there are times when 20 people are in the room, but there are times when it's like 2 afk people in all servers (idk if it's just my timezone, but it wasn't like this a while back.) Anyway, I prefer not to ban people unless they give me a reason to.

Yeah continuing what I was mentioning, usually the type of people you are talking about come and target their flames at me, not the other people in the room. I actually don't take offence over the internet I don't take offence irl either, I only get ticked off at my parents, even more, I find their insults really funny and entertaining, so I've never really banned the type of people you are talking about.

True, maybe you can stop the "crime" before it happens. However, have you ever considered that someone couldn't think of a name to use and just randomly mixed up letters, but isn't actually there to troll? Might not be often, but you wouldn't know using your logic.

I like this topic.
But I feel like it's content is more geared towards NFMM mods only rather than everyone else, and that this could be appropriately discussed among the mods only. I personally don't have anything to suggest, rebuke, or judge anything in this thread. But for those non-mod people who just want to suggest things, there's really no point to it. After all, it's all up to Insano to chose what kind of powers are reasonably right for the mods of this game.

Actually, I figured the community could suggest actions taken by us, not the abilities required. Personally, I would have been happier with a mute option instead of a ban option, since there is usually no need for a ban. Anyway, maybe you don't have any suggestions but hopefully this topic will be open for a while and things may change/ people get more ideas. Anyway, moderators have their own chat on FB, so this really isn't aimed at them.

How exactly does a moderator "delete" an account?

A moderator does not have the power to delete an account. Only Insano can do this.

Nope we can give up to a 24 hour ban from the room a person is ( sometimes it's less if the server gets reset earlier)

I have added a new section, for reasons I will not ban people ( just the ones that people always seem to expect a ban for, the entire list would be a waste of time.)

Again, suggestions from the community are welcome.

I suggest giving them warnings, just like online warnings from the game (ie from cussing, spam, etc).

The third one should not be there because some people just fool around and have fun like that so something like that should not be a situation where you should ban. Only if they are in wars I think they should be banned.

Yes, I always warn people before I ban, which omar told us to do which I don't do often anyway, personally I think the presence of a moderator is enough 90% of the time, but I'll add that anyway, thanks for your suggestion.

every once in a while it can be good for a laugh/challenge , just not being overused like boost stages, for example.

Yeah sure, wars don't need to be explained. However, sometimes people hack in regular games while the other people in the game want a legit game. Remember, it can be looked at in two ways: "Challenge and/or Comedy " for the people not hacking, or the hacker is gaining an unfair advantage (which shouldn't be okay regardless of the type of game.) I'm not really sure if I should add your suggestion, because from what I've seen from other moderators and the community in general, banning hackers shouldn't be limited to wars only.

I agree with all of these. If people run out of the stage and everyone else in the game is ticked off and angry at them for it, that person should be kicked from the game. I feel like a ban is too strong, but as far as I know that's all the moderators have. A warning to get back in the stage, and then a ban if not followed seems fine, though.

This only applies if someone is trying to get as far from the stage as possible. If the person just wants to have a little fun baiting/wasting people near the walls, that's fine, but if they're at 5% power and are miles away from the stage, they're ruining the game and shouldn't be in it.

It's really dumb when moderators ban for flaming, profanity, or arguments. You can ignore the person. Other than spamming and advertising, I don't see any reasons why someone should ban someone for what they text. Like Prayers said, mods are there to keep things fair, not babysit.
