How about if mountain exploration is directly tied in code to being booted from the server? Leave a reasonable margin between the exterior wall and this border to account for both small escapes from the walls by people (as well as any lag they may have).

I don't know if this would require major changes in the layout of the program due to variable scoping... certainly possible.

It could just be a timer, that warns you to get back to the stage within a certain time or get kicked.
