The long version:

Today I will be proposing a new style of tournament, following the old style of pick-up wars. However, the way this tournament will work differently to most. The year is 2020, and it is very clear for the most part who will want to team with who, causing it to be unfair on people left out in the competitive scene. This style of tournament (hopefully if it lasts long enough), will level out the playing field and will enforce the least amount of bias in teams as much as possible.

Q: BUT ULTI HOW WILL IT WORK????

What a good question! thank you for asking. The way the tournament and its teams will be settled will be sorted through the help of THIS LINK. Essentially what happens is that once there are enough people signed up for X amount of players, they will be split up into Y amount of groups. But before all of that, all of the names signed up will be entered into the list on the random teams generator.

Once the teams have been sorted, they will all be pitted against one another, one pick-up war against each team. Ideally, there will be at least 4 teams sorted, as evidently 4v4 will take up too much space/2v2 pickups are boring, etc. It's the least detrimental and the standard format for wars since 2011/2012.

The pick-up wars will follow the same fashion as classic rule wars, with the exception of better average for racing. The games will go up to first to 5 points. Once a team scores 5 points first, every player on that team will be awarded 5 points. The same goes for however many points the second team scores. If the score is 5-3, each player from the losing team will be awarded 3 points. It's up to you to rack up as many points as you can by yourself with the help of your team!

Q: BUT ULTIMATO SURELY SOME RANDOMISED TEAMS WILL BE UNFAIR WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT THEM?

Wow, another great question! You guys are on fire with the questions today. Well, as I am not a fan of sugar-coating things for people I will have to make my own judgement with possibly some feedback from people I am in contact with when deciding the teams. If the teams organised look a bit too in favour of one team winning, I will do everything I can in my power and judgement to strive to make an even and balanced playing field.

My own specific judgement, however, will be based on anything I've seen from peoples performance in previous games/wars/tournaments. I will try to make them as balanced as possible, that goes without saying: PEOPLE FROM THE SAME CLANS OR SUB-CLANS WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE PLACED IN THE SAME TEAMS IN THE FIRST ROUND, AS WELL AS TOP PLAYERS FROM EXISTING CLANS/SUB-CLANS WILL BE AVOIDED BEING PUT INTO A TEAM WITH ANOTHER NOTORIOUS TOP-PLAYER FROM A DIFFERENT CLAN

Evidently depending on the number of players signed up there may have to be exceptions, as it may be mathematically impossible to avoid having at least 2 players in the same team that typically work well together. But who knows, we will see once the sign-ups have been made.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EVERY TEAM HAS PLAYED THEIR GAMES?

Once all the respective teams have played all their matches, the teams will be reshuffled, depending on the amount of teams (again), the players will now be split up into 2 groups. A higher bracket and a lower bracket (half of the teams will be lower, half will be higher, overall it won't make much of a difference).

Players with the most points will advance to the higher bracket, and players with the least amount of points will be in the lower bracket. These brackets, however, can change each time as the points earned by each player will be RESET after their sequence of pick-ups have concluded. This allows a fluid rotation of teams throughout, as well as trying to incorporate fair match-making where possible.

NEW:

Once the teams have been made, each team will randomly be put against 2 other random teams. Each team will only have to play a total of 2 pickups before the teams get reset. The points earned by each player in each team will be tallied up and will help decide the higher and lower brackets.

For some reason, I didn't imagine more than 4 teams would be made, so I will change it up a bit:

Once there are enough players for 8 or 10 groups, the teams will be randomized and now each team will be randomly pitted against 2 other teams. Every team will have to play 2 matches before the teams reset again. (Realistically due to schedules or timezones I think it is unlikely that people will be able to 4 pickups in a week)

This is a really great idea. One thing - I think the teams should be kept entirely random. It's unlikely two really good players end up in the same team, but if they do, I'd say it's better to just let it play out. If teams are adjusted to be perfectly balanced, it sort of defeats the purpose of randomization. Just my two cents.

While I do agree this is definitely the most reasonable, I think its safe to say for the sake of enjoyment, it's fine to make small adjustments where possible even if they may make the smallest of differences. It may not be 100% randomized, but rather something like 95%, with the aid of some tweaks here and there to make it more interesting. The main idea behind this is to get people to play in teams with people they are usually not familiar with. In my eyes, I feel having people from the same team be randomly put in a team with one another is quite boring, as it takes away the whole point of "getting to learn how to play with new people".

Some examples I can think of straight off the bat is the Ulti + Phy combo, Toa + Evo combo, Dex + Phy combo, or Steam + Demise combo. Everyone has already seen these combinations of players before, so it brings nothing new to the table. Worst case scenario, once the real teams are made there may only be like 1 or 2 swaps and nothing more. Hopefully, that doesn't branch too far away from being random .

Ultimately I would like every team to surprise everyone where possible, and get new teamwork combinations going. Gets the whole community more involved and engaged with each other wouldn't you think?

Yeah, I'm 100% on board with that, especially if as you say there's only maybe 1-2 swaps. It'll definitely be an interesting experiment and bring the community together.
